How do cellular junctions contribute to the overall function of epithelial tissue? Describe at least two type(s) of cell junctions found in epithelium (ie. location, structure, function).
Epithelial tissues are continuous thin protective layer of cells that line outer surfaces of various organs, skin, and blood vessels. They also line the inner surfaces of various organs. There are three types of epithelial cells. They are squamous epithelium, columnar epithelium, and cuboidal epithelium.
Cell junctions are multiprotein cellular structures that adhere cells with the neighbouring cells as well the extracellular matrix. The main types of cell junctions are gap junctions, tight junctions, adhering junction and desmosomes.
