When the First World War broke out in Europe, many Americans wanted the U.S. to stay out of the war. Thus many Americans were seen supporting the policy of "strict and impartial neutrality adopted by President Woodrow Wilson. However, public opinion began to shift from neutrality to the U.S. entry in the war after the sinking of the Lusitania by Germany.
