In Japanese history, the Meiji restoration was a period of political and social revolution in 1866-69. It resulted in the dissolution of the feudal system and ended the power of the Tokugawa shogun and the Shogunate. It promoted the restoration of the imperial system. They desired to unite the country under a new, centralized government so that their army could be strengthened to protect against foreign influence.
