Question

This is a picture of a thermometer. The value for 'x' says 90 C and the value for 'y' says a value 10 C higher than 90. Record the value with proper estimation technique.

The image depicts a graduated cylinder partially filled with a blue liquid. The cylinder has measurement markings along its side, which likely indicate the volume of liquid. Within the liquid, there are two labeled sections:

1. The blue liquid inside the cylinder reaches a certain level. The meniscus of the liquid shows a slight curve typical of liquids in cylinders due to surface tension.

2. A square shape labeled “X” is submerged in the liquid. This label is placed below the liquid level, indicating an object or reference point within the liquid.

3. Above the liquid level, there is another square shape labeled “Y.” This label is situated in the air, above the liquid surface.

The label "X" is positioned lower than "Y," showing the relative positions of these markers within and above the liquid. The diagram could represent an educational illustration to demonstrate concepts of buoyancy, liquid measurement, or the properties of liquids in containers.

Expert Solution
Step 1

In a given thermometer, there are the longest lines, shorter lines, and shortest lines marked on the glass of the thermometer.  Mercury is raised to a certain height near the inner surface and is zero raise in the middle of the glass tube due to the surface tension. The measurements are made such that the middle level considered as a mark of the mercury level.
