The skeletal system consisting of bones is primarily responsible for providing the structural framework to the body. The human skeletal system can be divided into two types of the skeleton: the axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton includes all those bones that form the vertical and central axis of the body. The bones of the head, neck, chest, and back makeup the axial skeleton. The appendicular skeleton, on the other hand, is formed by all the bones of the upper and lower limbs, as well as the bones that attach each limb to the axial skeleton, such as, shoulder and pelvic girdle.
In an adult human body, there are a total of 206 bones that form the skeleton. This skeleton system, apart from providing body support, also facilitates the movement of the body by interacting with the muscular system of the body. The tendon is a fibrous connective tissue responsible for connecting muscle to bone, therefore connecting the two systems. The skeletal system is also responsible for the storage of minerals such as calcium or phosphorus.
