Aquaporins (AQPs) are transmembrane protein which help in the regulation of water flow into and outside of the cells. For a long time, it was believed that the entry or exit of water molecules from the cell is not regulated at all and only simple diffusion occurs in the cell membrane. However, simple diffusion alone cannot explain the rapid movement of water in the formation of aqueous humor. Hence, aquaporins were discovered in the early 1990s.

One of the most critical function of aquaporins is the prevention of the passage of ions while allowing the movement of water.
