from the biodiesel reaction indicate where the compounds: biodiesel, h20, nacl, naoh, and ch3oh will be according to layer 2 or 1

Transcribed Image Text:8. Once biodiesel and glycerol are separated, there's still the chance that the biodiesel is
contaminated by leftover reactants such as NaOH and methanol. We remove these
using a salt wash: we literally add a solution of NaCl dissolved in water and mix it all up
with the biodiesel. Below is an illustration of a tube containing the biodiesel, the salt
wash, and all potential contaminants. Indicate where you think the different compounds
settle after the wash is added, everything is mixed, and it all settles.

Transcribed Image Text:Below, you can see the reaction for the synthesis of biodiesel. It involves mixing vegetable oil,
methanol, and sodium hydroxide together and gently heating it to produce biodiesel and
glycerol. We'll be examining it in the next series of questions.
