Free Blacks of Philadelphia Oppose Colonization
In January 1817, about 3,000 African American men joined the Bethel A.M.E. Met in a church in Philadelphia (known as Mother Bethel AME) and condemned the American Colonization Society's plan to resettle free blacks in West Africa. The first black mass protest in the United States.
The origins of the colonial movement go back to the various schemes first proposed in the eighteenth century. Free black colonialism in Africa is a problem that has divided whites and blacks from the beginning. Some blacks supported immigration because they believed that justice could not be done to black Americans in the United States. Others believed that African-Americans should stay in the United States to fight slavery and have full legal rights as American citizens. Some whites saw colonialism as a way to liberate blacks from the country, while others believed that black Americans would be happier in Africa where they could live without racism. Others believed that black American colonists would play a major role in the Christianization and civilization of Africa.
