Mitosis
Week 10: Mitosis
Identifying stages of the cell cycle.
The life cycle of the cell is typically divided into 5 major phases: Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase,
Anaphase, and Telophase. The phases are listed next, along with the major events that occur during each
phase.
Interphase. During interphase, the cell is carrying out its routine functions.
Sometimes nucleoli will be visible. Chromosomes are duplicated during S-phase of
this period.
Prophase. Prophase is the first stage of Mitosis. The chromosomes condense so
that they are visible in the light microscope, the nuclear envelope dissolves and the
centrioles begin moving toward opposite poles. Microtubules extend from the
centrioles to attach in the region of the centromere on each chromosome.
美
Metaphase. In this phase, the microtubules help align the chromosomes in the
center of the cell at the metaphase plate. This arrangement helps ensure that each
of the daughter cells will receive one copy of each chromosome.
Anaphase. In this phase, each set of chromosomes are pulled to opposite sides of
the cell in preparation for cell division.
