essential to life. You will be able to recognize the major categories of biomolecules
such as carbohydrates and lipids. Also, you will be able to differentiate
carbohydrates and lipids in terms of their structure as well as their functions to
make our body healthy.
BIOMOLECULES: CARBOHYDRATES AND LIPIDS
All living things are made up of organic molecules which are group into
larger molecules, known as biomolecules. These biomolecules serve as the basic
unit of life and also furnish the structural components of cells. Carbohydrates and
lipids are among the major classes of biomolecules.
Carbohydrates are energy sources of living organisms. These are simple
sugar, starch, and cellulose. They consist of elements carbon, hydrogen, and
oxygen with the empirical formula of Ca(H2O)n. There are three kinds of
carbohydrates:
Monosaccharides are simple sugars. They are sweet, colorless, crystalline, and
soluble in water. The most common monosaccharides are glucose and fructose.
Both of these monosaccharides have the same formula C.H12O6 but have different
structures. Disaccharides are sugars formed through the process of condensation
of two monosaccharides, and can split back through reverse process hydrolysis.
The sucrose in sugar cane and the lactose in milk are some examples of
disaccharides.

Starch and cellulose substances constitute a long-chain of molecules called
polysaccharides. Starch is utilized by plants to store energy and carbon. These

Lipids are substances that store energy for later. The most familiar lipids are
fats, oils, and waxes. Because they come from plant or animal sources, fats and
oils are abundant in foods. Fats and oils serve as fuels of the body. Fats are solid at
room temperature and contain saturated fatty acids while oils are liquids are
liquids at room temperature and contain unsaturated fatty acids. The general
formula of fatty acids is CH3(CH2)„COOH. Fats are useful in storing energy, much
more than carbohydrates and proteins. Thus, it is harder to burn fat in the body.
Oils help build healthy cell membranes and absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K'and
store them in our body parts.
