Watson and Crick postulated the double-stranded model of the helix. A deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecular group that carries and transmits genetic information from parents to offspring. All eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells are involved.

It possesses certain characteristics that qualify it as a genetic component. Certain organisms have different types of nucleic acids as their genetic material - DNA or RNA.

Thus, genetics also creates an understanding of various medical conditions.

Viruses are a nucleoprotein entity which is able to utilize the synthetic machinery of a living cell of another organism for its multiplication. They are obligate parasites i.e., inert outside the host cell. They do not have biosynthetic machinery or a system to liberate energy. Based on their genetic material they are of two types, those who have DNA as their genetic material are known as DNA viruses and those having RNA as their genetic material are known as RNA viruses.
