Explain Southwestern Desert Cultures
Southwestern culture is very different from plain culture. The southwest dessert is very dry. Most of the land is desert. The desert is a very dry place where some plants grow. Water is a valuable natural resource in this culture. In this culture the Indians had strict rules regarding the use of water. Even young children are taught to be careful with the water they use. There are very few animals in the desert. This means that Indians cannot rely on hunting to find food. They had to find other ways to get food. They became farmers. Some important southwestern cultural tribes are the Anasaji, Hopi, Pueblo and Navajo.
Anasazi Indians lived 1,000 years ago. Anasazi built their houses in a special place. The land in the southwest is very different from the Great Plains. Instead of wide-open land, it was created with uneven land with southwestern valleys and mustaches (our Suez). The mustache is a landform made of stone, and it is shaped like a high flat table. In fact, the word mustache is the Spanish word for table.
