In biological systems, receptors are chemical structures made up of proteins that receive and transmit signals. Chemical messengers such as hormones bind to a specific site on the receptor and cause a cellular/tissue response, such as a change in the electrical activity of the cell.
The receptor's function can be divided into three categories: signal relay, amplification, and integration. After the binding of the ligand to the receptor a chemical signal is produced, then the signal is propagated, the intensity of the signal is amplified and the signal is integrated into another metabolic pathway.
