Apartheid was the system of institutionalized segregation rehearsed in South Africa from 1948 to 1990. The nation was monopolized by a minority white population which categorized the blacks and people of color as less social status citizens. The whites dominated the political, social, and economic institutions and racially segregated the rest of the people. The political and economic imbalance was a colossal problem in South Africa, and the system of Apartheid received international criticism.
The government brutely repressed the political campaign against Apartheid in South Africa, and the black people persisted in their effort under the leadership of Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress. The movement attained international support from other governments and media.
