On the basis of Geological Formation, rocks can be classified into 3 categories:-
- Igneous rocks
It is also known as primary, unstratified or eruptive rocks. It is formed by solidification of Magma or lava formed by volcanic eruption. (Example- Granite, Basalt, Gabbro, etc)
- Sedimentary rocks ( also known as stratified rocks)Sedimentary rocks are formed by consolidation of the products of weathering obtained from the pre-exisiting rocks. (Weathering agents are rain, sun, air etc.) (Example - Chalk, Magnesite, limestone, sand stone, etc)
- Metamorphic rocksThey are formed by the change in character of the pre-existing rocks when subjected to great heat and pressure. The process of their transformation is called metamorphism. (Example - Slate and marble)
