Explain about sesquiterpene ? How many carbons a sesquiterpene contains ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Sesquiterpenes are obtained naturally. These can be used as a media to find many disease and cure them. It can be oxidised and rearranged in such a way so that the required sequiterpenoids can be obtained, which can be used further.

Step 2

It is a class of terpenes, which are composed of isoprene. The structure of isoprene can be written as: CH2=C(CH3)-CH=CH2. It has three isoprene unit in its structure. It may or may not contain cyclic structure. It may be linear, cyclic, bicyclic, or tricyclic. These can also obtained in the form of lactone. Many plants which produce latex, may contain sesquiterpene which is a potential candidate for anti-insecticidal, and anti-microbial agent.
