Example: The linear equation N=−2.06t+50 where N is the number of cases of smallpox in units of millions and t is the number of years after 1950, can be used to approximate the number of people with smallpox. According to the linear model, how many people had smallpox in 1950 and in 1967? According to the model, when will smallpox be eradicated?  Give answers to the nearest hundredth where needed. The slope of the smallpox equation means every year after the year -------   , the number of cases of smallpox went down by ------   million people. The y - intercept means that the number of cases in the year was ------   million people.

Intro Problem: Edward Jenner's demonstration, in 1798, that inoculation with cowpox could protect against smallpox brought the first hope that the disease could be controlled.

In the early 1950s – 150 years after the introduction of vaccination – an estimated 50 million cases of smallpox occurred in the world each year, a figure which fell to around 15 million by 1967 because of vaccination.

In 1967, when the World Health Organization (WHO) launched an intensified plan to eradicate smallpox, the “ancient scourge” threatened 60% of the world's population, killed every fourth victim, scarred or blinded most survivors, and eluded any form of treatment.

Through the success of the global eradication campaign, smallpox was finally pushed back to the horn of Africa and then to a single last natural case, which occurred in Somalia in 1977.
