Jefferson Davis insisted that “slavery ‘was in no wise the cause of the conflict, but only an incident.’ Moreover, he contributed a defense of slavery itself that was as direct as any written in the postwar South. ‘Generally,’ Davis claimed, African Americans' ancestors…”
Confederate President Davis clarified in his postwar narrative that the reality stays unchanged and indisputable, that the presence of African servitude was in no wise the cause of the dispute but only an occurrence.
