The cellular organisms are of two types, prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The cells of eukaryotes have a proper nucleus with a nuclear membrane and other membrane-bound organelles. In contrast, prokaryotes' cells do not have envelope-enclosed nucleus and organelles such as mitochondria and other membrane-bound organelles. A nucleoid can be defined as an irregularly-shaped central region present in the prokaryotes, such as a bacterium. The genetic material of prokaryotes is found in the nucleoid, but membrane does not surround it.
