Discuss “The respiratory pathway is an amphibolic pathway.”

Expert Solution
Step 1

Metabolism includes all the chemical reactions that occur inside the living cell. Metabolic pathways are categorized as catabolic and anabolic pathways.

Step 2

The catabolic pathways break down the complex molecules into the simpler ones. Catabolic pathways are mostly exergonic and release energy.

Anabolic pathways produce new and complex molecules from simpler substances. Anabolic pathways are mostly endergonic.

Step 3

Respiration includes breathing, exchange of gases in the lungs, and cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is the oxidation of nutrients. It includes a breakdown of complex nutrient molecules present in the food into simpler substances. Respiratory pathway breaks down glucose into CO2 and H2O. Similarly, other nutrients such as fats and proteins also enter into the respiratory pathway at various steps and are oxidized into CO2 and H2O.

Since respiration breaks down the complex molecules (glucose, proteins, fats) into simpler substances, it is a catabolic process.
