The immune system comprises B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, platelets, antigen-presenting cells, and other granulocytes. T-cells are involved in cell-mediated immunity and B-cells are involved in humoral mediated immunity.

Immune cells are capable of differentiating self cells and non-self cells. Constant exposure of one's own cells (self cells) to the immune system results in the development of tolerance against self cells. Therefore, the immune system does not consider self-cells as foreign.
