Notice that in Figure 6, before passing through the slit, the wave was traveling to the right, but after it has
passed through the slit, the wave has spread out and is traveling in an array of directions. This spreading of a
wave when it is squeezed is the phenomena of diffraction.
There are places to the right of the barrier where wavelets’ crests overlap other wavelets' troughs yielding
destructive interference. Figure 6(b) shows the lines along which there exists destructive interference, these
lines are labeled D.
