The elements in the left end of the periodic table are metals and the elements in the right end of the periodic table are non metals. In general metal will lose electron (cation) and non metal will gain electron (anion).

 Ionic compounds are formed by the transferring of electrons between a metal and a non metal. Neutral ionic compounds are ionic compounds which are electrically neutral. That means in neutral ionic compounds there is no net charge.
