Desribe the general composition, properties, uses, applications of the following materials and their reasons:
- HSLA steel
- Gray cast iron
1) HSLA steel stands for High-strength low-alloy steel
Composition : low carbon content of between 0.05% – 0.25% for sufficient formability and weldability and the remainder iron.
and a manganese content of up to 2%
Properties : 1) HSLA has high strength to weight ratio.
2) High resistance against temperature
3) High resistance against corrosion
4) formability
5) weldability
6) Resistant to fatigue etc
Uses : 1)Used in bridges or buildings for weight saving and durability
2) Most of the Automobile materials are made from it
Applications : HSLA are designed to handle large amounts of stress or need a good strength-to-weight ratio. HSLA steel cross-sections and structures are usually 20 to 30% lighter than a carbon steel with the same strength and hence are used in constructions and automobile industry very frequently
