The Calvin cycle is a light-independent reaction that takes place in the stroma of the chloroplast during photosynthesis. It is also known as a dark reaction. It converts the light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose or carbohydrates.The Calvin cycle involves a series of reactions that occur in a circular pattern in the stroma of chloroplasts during photosynthesis. These circular series of reactions are as follows:1) Carbon Fixation (phase 1): In this atmospheric process, carbon dioxide combines with the ribulose 1, 5 bisphosphate (RuBP) to form the two molecules of 3-phosphoglyerate and hence fix the atmospheric carbon in chemical form. This reaction occurs in the presence of an enzyme known as ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBisCO).2) Reduction (phase 2): During this reaction, the 3-phosphoglycerate in the presence of ATP and NADPh is converted to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. These ATP and NADPH are produced during light-dependent reactions in the thylakoid membrane, which are used here.3) Regeneration of RuBP (phase 3): The RuBP is regenrated by some of the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, thus formed. Thus, regeneration is required so that the Calvin cycle can continue in a circular cycle.At the end of the Calvin cycle, the high-energy molecules that store energy originally derived from light are ATP and NADPH molecules. These are the high-energy molecules that are synthesized during the light-dependent reactions in the thylakoid membrane in chloroplasts.
