Describe the work of the diaphragm in ventilation.

The term ventilation is associated with the physical process in which gaseous exchange takes place between lungs and atmospheric air. Ventilation can also be termed as breathing. Alveoli play an important role in the gaseous (oxygen gas and carbon dioxide gas) exchange. Two stages of pulmonary ventilation include inspiration as well as expiration.
Human beings have a diaphragm, which is referred to as the largest respiratory muscle. It is a dome-shaped fibrous respiratory muscle that can closes thoracic cavity from below. Diaphragm can regulate the overall decrease and increase of thoracic cavity. Moreover, it is a separating muscle that can be found between the abdomen and thorax.
