Theories of failures relates different failure criterions with the properties of the materials such as yield strength or ultimate strength. The theories make use of principal stresses.

Tresca yield criterion is also known as Maximum shear stress theory.

As per this theory, yielding takes place when the maximum shear stress in the material is equal to the shear stress at yielding in a uniaxial tensile test.

Therefore, Tmax=Ty   (T is the shear stress)

In terms of principal stresses, we can express maximum shear stress as Tmax σ1-σ22

where σ1 and σ2 are the maximum and minimum principal moments of inertia.

Thus we can write, σ1-σ22=Ty
