A transient shift in voltage (membrane potential) across the cell membrane of heart cells is referred to as the cardiac action potential. Ion channels allow charged atoms (called ions) to travel between the inside and exterior of the cell. An action potential travels through an axon's cell membrane until it reaches the terminal button. Threshold or suprathreshold stimulation on a cell can trigger an activity potential. The cardiac conduction system is made up of nodes and specialised conduction cells that help the heart muscle contract.
