Question

Describe the process of Sublevel Energy Splitting in Multi-Electron-Atoms?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Multi-Electron Atoms

Atoms having more than one electron are termed as multi electron atom.

If the nucleus is having more positive charge it will attract the electron towards itself  and hence lowering the energy.

whereas if there are more number of electrons in the outer shell it will cause repulsion which is known as shielding. In this case, outer electron move away and energy becomes higher.

Actual nuclear charge a particular electron feels is called Zeff , Zeff=Z(nuclear charge)-S(average no. of electrons)

Sublevel Splitting means splitting of levels into sub-levels . Each energy level is split into sub-levels of different energy. Splitting is caused by penetration and its effect on shielding

For given n value, Lower is the value of l, indicates a lower energy sub-level.

l is the azimuthal quantum number and n is the principle quantum number.
