Describe the effects of aging on the respiratory system
The respiratory tract which helps in the inspiration of air into the body and expiration of air outside the body and lungs which is responsible for the gaseous exchange comprises the respiratory system. It provides oxygen to the blood and tissues and removes carbon dioxide and other toxic gases from the body.
Aging brings about many changes in the body. The bones around the chest and spine area becomes thinner and the muscles involves in breathing becomes weaker which result in the low level of oxygen in the body. The lung tissues can lose their ability to completely open the airways which results in the trapped air in lungs and low supply of oxygen to blood. The nervous system controlling the breathing can also be affected. The body also becomes venerable for the lung infections and other diseases like pneumonia and bronchitis as the immune system also become weak with aging.
