The pleural cavity, its associated pleurae, support optimal functioning of the lungs during breathing. The pleural cavity includes pleural fluid, which behaves as a lubricant and enables the pleurae to slide skillfully against each other during respiratory movements.
Step 2
The pleura builds too much fluid when it's disturbed, provoked, or infected. This fluid accumulates in the chest pocket outside the lung, resulting in what's known as a pleural effusion. Specific kinds of cancer can affect pleural effusions, lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women being the most widespread.
