Question

Describe the different forms of collective behavior, and
explain why people participate in collective behavior

Expert Solution
Step 1

Collective behavior refers to a social process that involves interaction among a group of people. This type of interaction is not controlled or regulated by any institution. Collective behavior is generally spontaneous and short-lived in nature.

Step 2

There are mainly four types of collective behavior-

  • Casual Crowds- This includes a group of people gathered in a specific location but does not share any similarities. They may or may not interact among themselves and might leave as soon as the individual purposes are solved. For example- people gathering at a shop.
  • Conventional Crowds- This crowd regularly gathers at a specific given time and a place for a particular purpose. They share similar interests and interact with each other—for example- regular gatherings at a church.
  • Expressive Crowds- This type of crowd forms to express their emotions for a specific event. For example- funerals or weddings.
  • Acting Crowds- These are the crowds that gather as a spontaneous reaction to a sudden event or occurrence. They have a similar goal and are short-lived in nature. These crowds get dispersed once the event is over. For example- a group that has gathered around an accident.

People participate in collective behavior when individuals or groups lose their faith in the social system. They defy the existing system of law and order and start making decisions themselves. People lose their faith in society when the social order is not fair and just. Collective behavior may also occur when people show solidarity to their community. Sometimes, monotony and boredom among people may also lead them to join collective action.
