Describe the contributions of sudhof that demonstrated the importance of calcium from regulating membrane fusion
The great scientist Thomas C. Sudhof along with Richard Scheller discovered the molecular machinery and regulatory mechanisms which are responsible for the rapid release of the neurotransmitters.
Sudhof also characterized a set of proteins that mediate the fusion of neurotransmitter-filled synaptic vesicles with plasma membranes of pre-synaptic nerve terminals.
Sudhoff after performing various experiments to demonstrate and relate Synaptotagmin (a C2 Domain) as Calcium sensor in the vesicle exocytosis. He also experimented and proved that the C2 Domain consists of autonomously folded, calcium-regulating domain synaptotagmin.
He also said that, "a putative calcium sensor for releasing of neurotransmitter, synaptotagmin might not be necessary for fusion of synaptic vesicles.
