11. Describe the components of a synovial joint and their functions.
Synovial joints are also known as diarthrosis, depicting their characteristic feature that is, freely mobile. These are the most important and common types of joints in the body. In a synovial joint, the surfaces of bones articulating with each other have the presence of thin hyaline cartilage ( or articular cartilage) that helps to minimize the friction between the articulating surfaces of bones associated and also help in absorbing shock. Based upon the types of movement they perform, synovial joints can be the hinge joint (elbow, between humerus and ulna), saddle joint (carpometacarpal joint), pivot joint (atlantoaxial), condyloid joint (metacarpophalangeal), and ball and socket joint (hip joint).
