The anatomy and function of the male accessory reproductive organs are as follows:-
There are 3 main accessory sex organs-
- Prostate
- Bulbourethral gland
- Seminal vesicle
1) Prostate - Located between bladder and pennies' , urethra runs through the prostate gland.
It's conical in shape and size measures similar to a walnut.
It's covers by fibromuscular layer of tissue and consist of glandular tissue.
Function - it secretes a proteolytic enzyme to the sperms and it protects the sperm from coagulation after ejaculation. Helps in forceful expulsion of the sperm.
2) Bulbourethral glands- It's a pair of pea shaped glands on either side present beneath the prostate gland.
Function - production of pre ejaculatory fluid , For the passage of sperm through urethra , it neutralizes the urethra from acidic medium.
3) Seminal glands-
It's also a paired gland seen behind the urinary bladder.
They are elongated and coiled in structure.
They measure 5-10cm in length.
They have secretory glands which secrets the fluid.
Secretions are drain into the urethra, and to vasa differentia.
