Lateral earth pressure:
Lateral earth pressure is expressed as the earth pressure under the fill of an embankment are moved to the foundation soil in the form of shear stress, that can be substantially decrease the bearing capacity of the footing (foundation), and because of this stability of embankment also affected.
Lateral earth pressure can be sub-divided into three classes, depending upon the movement of the retaining wall with respect to back fill soil.
- Wall not move at all (Earth pressure at rest)
- Wall move away from the soil (Active earth pressure)
- Wall move towards the backfill of the soil (Passive earth pressure).
