Question

Describe and compare the pathophysiology, etiology,
manifestations, diagnostic tests, and treatment for each of
the selected anemias: iron-deficiency, pernicious, aplastic,
sickle cell, and thalassemia.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Anemia is a disorder in which your body's tissues do not get enough oxygen because you do not have enough healthy red blood cells. You may feel fatigued and weak if you have anemia. Anemia comes in a variety of types, each with its unique etiology. Anemia can be minor to severe, and it can be transitory or long-term.

If someone possesses symptoms of anemia, a doctor's consultation is recommended because it could be an indication of something more serious. Anemia can be treated in a variety of ways, from taking vitamins to undergoing medical procedures. Some types of anemia may be prevented by eating a healthy, diversified diet. The different types of anemia are a) Aplastic anemia, b) Iron deficiency anemia, c) Sickle cell anemia, d) Thalassemia, e) Vitamin deficiency anemia (pernicious anemia).

Step 2: Pathophysiology

Iron deficiency anemia manifests in stages. The first stage occurs when an individual's iron need exceeds their intake, resulting in the gradual depletion of bone marrow iron stores. To compensate for the loss of stored iron absorption rises. Deficiency affects RBC synthesis in later phases, resulting in anemia. In pernicious anemia, the hematologic manifestation of chronic atrophic gastric affecting the corpus of the stomach, which depletes the gastric mucosa of gastric parietal cells. By 10-20 years, asymptomatic autoimmune gastric, a chronic inflammatory condition of the stomach mucosa precedes corpus atrophy.

Aplastic anemia is characterized by hypocellularity of the bone marrow, which results in peripheral cytopenias. Hematopoietic stem cell injury is caused by an antigen-driven and likely autoimmune dysregulation of T- cell homeostasis, which ultimately leads to the pathogenesis of the acquired form of this disease. In the case of sickle cell anemia, a mutation in the beta-globin chain of the hemoglobin molecule resulting unique property when deoxygenated. The exact mechanism by which aberrant sickle cells disrupt normal tissue perfusion is complex and poorly understood. Thalassemia is a blood condition caused by DNA abnormalities in cells responsible for the production of hemoglobin. This causes a decrease in the number and capacity of RBC to transport oxygen throughout the body, resulting in symptoms such as weariness.
