Polycythemia vera, a myeloproliferative neoplasm is a chronic condition and is life threatening. Myeloproliferative neoplasms are bone marrow disorders that are featured by the clonal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. In polycythemia vera overproduction of erythrocytes is noted. High levels of white blood cells and platelets may also be present in patients affected with the condition. The patient may have complications associated with thrombosis and bleeding.  Hyperviscosity and thrombosis, impairs the oxygen delivery that lead to symptoms in this condition.
