Lateral earth pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by the soil mass in horizontal direction on the retaining wall. The strength and consolidation behavior of soil are affected due to this so it is considered important in designing of structures.
On the basis on movement of wall lateral pressure is divided into 3 categories.
- Earth pressure at rest
- Active earth pressure
- Passive earth pressure
In case of active stage the wall moves away from the back-fill and portion of back-fill just behind the wall leaves the rest of the soil mass and moves along the wall. The portion of back-fill that move with the wall is known as failure wedge.
