Define these 4 terms: alleles, gene expression independent assortment, and chromosomal segregation.  Tell how they are related to one another in terms of genetics and meiosis.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Genetics is the branch of biology which deals with the study of genes, heredity and variation in characteristics which are inherited in organisms.

Step 2

Allele is defined as a pair of genes or series of genes on a chromosome which determines the hereditary characteristics. It is located on the same locus on a particular chromosome and controls the same characteristic of chromosome like blood type or color blindness. They are also called as allele morphs. There are two forms of alleles: dominant and recessive. Dominant alleles are expressed over recessive alleles and recessive allele will express only in the absence of dominant allele.

Gene expression is defined as a process by which the information or instructions in the DNA is converted into the functional product like protein or RNA. It is an extremely regulated process which makes a cell to respond its changing environment. Two main steps involved in transcription and translation. Transcription is a process by which DNA is converted into RNA which is then translated to form proteins (translation).
