Question

Define the process of Determining the Substitution and Elimination Products from an Alkyl Halide

Expert Solution
Step 1

Alkyl halides undergoes two type of reactions

  • Substitution reaction
  • Elimination reaction
Step 2

The substitution reaction of alkyl halide is nucleophilic substitution reaction as new bond is formed by electrophilic alkyl halide with nucleophile that replaces the halogen at alpha-carbon. Halogen is the leaving group as only four bonds are formed by carbon. Alkyl halides are good examples of electrophiles because polar bond is shared by halogen with carbon, are polarizable and halide anion that is relatively stable leaving group is formed.

Example: The substitution reaction of 2-bromopropane results in formation of 2-propanol.
