Define Schmertmann Method.
Schmertmann Method.
This method is used to find the elastic settlement of the soil under the footing. In sandy soil, it is difficult to obtain the value of compression index as undisturbed samples are not easy to collect.
Schmertmann method can be used to determine the settlement in sand and as well as gravel.
This method is specially used, when the Cone penetration test data is available. This method uses a basic triangular strain distribution and determines the settlement correspondingly. The time factor should also be considered for time dependent effects.
The settlement under the footing is given by,
Here, is the settlement, is the depth correction factor, is the secondary creep correction factor, is the net footing base pressure, is the thickness of the soil layer, is the elastic modulus of soil and is the vertical strain influence factor.
