Define Alkenes & what are its features ?

Expert Solution
Alkenes

Alkenes are a class of unsaturated hydrocarbons which has a two sp2 hybridized carbon atoms, meaning that alkenes has one double-bonded carbon atoms pair.

for example: The simplest alkene known is ethene ( CH2=CH2 ), in this hydrocarbon compound there are only two carbon atoms and both are sp2 hybridized and double-bonded to each other.

 Functional group:         -C=C-

General molecular formula:       CnH2n

Physical properties of alkenes
  • Alkenes are generally insoluble in water and are soluble in non-polar solvents
  • The density of alkenes is more than that of water
  • Thee boiling and melting point of alkenes is generally lower than that of an alkane having the same number of carbon atoms.
  • Unsubstituted alkenes having carbon atoms in between 5-17 are liquids.
  • Alkenes having >17 carbon atoms are solids.
