Step 1: Ozone Formation and Destruction in the Stratosphere
In the stratosphere, UV radiation breaks down ozone into oxygen atoms and molecules. These oxygen atoms can then react with other ozone molecules to form oxygen, or they can react with catalyst X to form XO. XO can then react with another ozone molecule to form X and oxygen.
This catalytic cycle is driven by the destruction of two ozone molecules for every UV photon absorbed. Crutzen's discovery of this catalytic cycle was a remarkable advance in our understanding of ozone depletion. It helped explain why small amounts of man-made pollutants such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) can have such a dramatic effect on the ozone layer
