Expert Solution
Step 1: Cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that affects protein in the body. Cystic fibrosis patients have a faulty protein that affects the body's cells, tissues, and glands that produce mucus and sweat.

Mucus normally protects the linings of the airways, digestive tract, and other organs and tissues by being slippery. Cystic fibrosis patients produce thick, sticky mucus, which can accumulate and cause blockages, damage, or infections in the affected organs. Organs such as the lungs and pancreas are also harmed by inflammation.
