A260-ml. task contains pure helium at a pressure of 758 torr. A second flask with a volume of 485
mil. contains pure argon at a pressure of 725 torr.
If we connect the two flasks through a stopcock and we open the stopcock, what is the partial pressure of hellum?
Express the partial pressure in torr to three significant figures.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given that -

Volume of helium = 260 mL  = 0.260 L

Pressure of helium = 759 torr = 0.998 atm

Volume of argon = 485 mL = 0.485 L

Pressure of Argon = 726 torr = 0.955 atm

Total pressure, Ptotal = 759+726 = 1485 torr = 1.485×10=~ 1.49×10torr

Then, mole fraction of Helium is -

XHe = moles of helium/total moles

From ideal gas equation PV=nRT, here R and T are constant, then n = PV -

XHe = (0.998×0.260)/(0.998×0.260)+(0.955×0.485)

XHe = 0.25948/0.25948+0.463175

XHe = 0.25948/0.722655

XHe = 0.359
