Transcribed Image Text:Geologists, through various methods of rock-dating (mostly radiometric methods) and
data extrapolation, have determined that our planet was formed approximately 4.55
BILLION years ago. To us as humans, numbers like "million" or "billion" don't really
compute; for the most part, the numbers that we encounter in our day-to-day don't really
go that high. There's 60 seconds in a minute; 60 minutes in an hour; 24 hours in a day;
365 days in a year. Even the longest-living humans don't make it too far past 100 years.
In general, when we think of numbers like "million" or "billion", we just mash them
together in a category we call "a lot" and leave it at that.
For example, I can tell you that the following photo is of a mineral crystal (a zircon) that's
4.375 billion years old:
Don't worry about the blue (it's not that color, it's just imaged using a technique called
cathodoluminescence, which helps us see the "layers"); the thing to see is that it has
many layers, each of which might have only taken hours, days, or weeks to form. But the

Expert Solution

Step 1: Age of earth
According to estimates, the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. This estimate is based on a number of scientific techniques, such as radiometric dating of rocks and minerals, research into Earth's geology, and analysis of the ages of meteorites. As of the knowledge cutoff date in September 2021, it represents the existing consensus among experts in the fields of geology and planetary science.
