In India, September 2016 marked the introduction of 4G services with free voice calls for lifetime and lowest data rates by Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio. The telecom service provider moved its focus from voice to data, making it available at remote areas where no coverage existed before.
The company captured the market by making the services available free of cost for the initial six months, later extending to a year. The competitors like Airtel, Idea-Vodafone suffered a drastic decline in revenues and customer base.

The major highlights of the disruption story are as follows:
1. Reliance Jio offered free services for nearly a month in order to establish its market presence.
2. The focus of payment now shifted from voice to data. Free sim cards were distributed and made available easily with the Aadhar details
3. Reliance Jio offered 4G compatible handsets called 'Lyf' at cheaper rates under so that its services become available to the masses.
4. The company was planning for this move for quite a time as it made major acquisitions acquiring towers from RCom and laying fibre optic cable network throughout the country.
5. 4G enabled companies to use technologies like Software-defined networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) etc.

The technology disruption proved to be a boon for the customers as they enjoyed free voice and data services. After the completion of the free service period, the data rates for Jio was lower in comparison to the competitors. The 4G handset availability made it possible for every individual to receive the benefits of the disruptive move. Moreover, RJio gave bundled services under Jio app like live TV, live music, instant messaging and social media services.
The major competitors to Jio at the time of launch were Airtel, Vodafone and Idea. They suffered a heavy fall in revenue and loss of customer base. This move created a threat of monopoly in the market thus, making competitors going to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for help. Moreover, this disruption caused Idea and Vodafone merger, thus reducing the competitors to just two.
This move reduced the alternatives for the customers when it comes to choosing a service provider, but the competitive pricing still offers some bargaining power to the customers.
