COMPARING THE OLD AND NEW AUFBAU 1. Write the electron configuration for the lead (Pb) atom with both the Old Aufbau and the New Aufbau diagrams. 2. Explain how this change to the newelectron configuration would affect the number of valence electrons in lead.

Question
New data leads to new models. Imagine that group of scientists collected data that caused us to need to change our diagram for the aufbau principle. Below are the diagrams for the aufbau principle we currently use, next to it is the “new” diagram. Please help with the questions below. Thank you so much.

COMPARING THE OLD AND NEW AUFBAU
1.
Write the electron configuration for the lead (Pb) atom with both the Old Aufbau and the
New Aufbau diagrams.
2. Explain how this change to the new electron configuration would affect the number of
valence electrons in lead.
Using the NEW AUFBAU:
The new aufbau diagram changes the number of valence electrons in many atoms. This is going
to change the arrangement of the periodic table.
3. Use pattems of electron configuration and Lewis structures found in the periodic table
(see the corresponding ChemQuests) to revise the arrangement of the first 36 elements
so that the same patterns exist (elements should still be listed in order of atomic
number).
Make sure that you explain your logic and use examples to justify your choices, including
which elements are first and last in each row.
