Expert Solution
Psychology of Addiction

Addiction, in simple terms, refers to the repeated use of a substance or repeated engagement in behavior(s) that lead to rewarding consequences. Addiction is a chronic condition that leads to severe physical and psychological damages to the person suffering from it. As per the statistics, nearly 1 in 7 Americans are suffering from addiction.

Psychologists have purported two models to explain addiction. One is the disease model, which says that addiction is a disease that can be diagnosed like any other (say diabetes, for instance); it is an outcome of chemical imbalances in the brain, and is attributed to both, genetic and environmental factors. The other model is the choice model which says that addiction is the outcome of people's voluntary actions. Addiction is understood as a choice according to this model, and the components playing a role in addiction are rewards, stress, etc.
